Pajama Party of the Airwaves
Remember back to the days when all of us girls would get together at a friends house for a slumber party? Pizza, Coca-Cola, talkin' about boys, trying on make-up.....pillow fights... trying not to fall asleep....
The Las Vegas Chapter of SOAR will re-live those memories when we host our SECOND "Pajama Party" Special Event Station, Saturday night March 15th, 2014.
That's right ladies. Throw your favorite jammies in your overnight bag and come join us for our combination girls sleep-over/radio operating party. All girls, whether you are a teen, pre-teen, tween, or way beyond are invited to join in.
If you are a YL outside of the area or an OM, we will see you on the air. Listen for the call "CQ YL Pajama Party"
The fun begins at 5:30 PM. PDT (Sunday 00:30 UTC) For details and location email:

Shortwave Radio Building Party
Bridget works on building her radio.
The Las Vegas, Nevada ladies of SOAR recently hosted a "Build It Party" where they constructed four-band regenerative shortwave receivers.
The session began with a sack lunch and social hour. This was followed by a bit of classroom instruction from ARRL Registered Instructor John Bigley-N7UR who diagramed the circuit and demonstrated how regeneration vastly improved early radio receivers.
The ladies spent about five hours identifying the various components, assembling, soldering, and testing their new radios.
They were also joined by a couple of OM's. One, Calvin Groom-KE6OEH was on hand as a surrogate for his wife Dolly, who had to work.

'Pajama Party' Special Event Station is a big hit
SOAR Vice-President Judy Carpenter KC7ZVE
The ladies of SOAR got a great introduction to being on the receiving end of the pile-ups when then recently operated their first Special Event Station. The event was a tribute to what has most certainly been a part of every young girls social life......the pajama party.
Despite being deep in one of the worse droughts in history and not having had a single drop of rain this year, the skies darkened and a torrential downpour erupted just as the vertical antennas were being installed. Severe lightning brought the antenna set-up to a halt and the ladies were forced to operate with a single R7 antenna which was sorely in need of some additional tuning.
Tradition would dictate that the food of choice at a girls sleep-over would be pizza and Coca-Cola. However the Pajama Party Special Event sleep-over happened to fall on St. Patricks Day. So hoping for a bit of the "Luck O' the Irish" the girls went with a corned beef and cabbage dinner instead.
